This is the first post in a series explaining the details of the MB2-716 certification. MB2-716 was released around Feb 2017 and is the latest version of Microsoft’s Customization and Configuration exam. I have blogged in detail about the previous exam, MB2-712. During this series I will update all of my earlier posts and add in any new details specific to MB2-716.
I will try to make these posts detailed enough for the CRM Dynamics 365 novice to gain the required knowledge whilst still informative enough for experts to use these posts as revision guides. In fact the process of creating these posts will be my revision for this exam, meaning I will be going on the same journey as you!
The customization and configuration certification seems to be one that developers tend to target, however the exam is also a useful learning objective for CRM Functional Consultants and Business Analysts. A Business Analyst might not routinely customize Dynamics 365 but having a deep understanding of the products capabilities will do doubt enhance their capabilities.
First of all a word of warning for anyone about to embark on preparing for this exam!
The Customization and Configuration exam is big! By this I mean its scope is wide, the result of which is you’ll need to take in quite a bit of knowledge. But “Don’t Panic”. As learning about Dynamics 365 is rewarding and you’ll enjoy the process.
I have two key tips for anyone preparing for these types of Microsoft exam;
-
Allow yourself plenty of time. It is not a race! Give your yourself plenty of time to learn the subject deeply before attempting the exam. The exact amount of time required will vary depending on your experience but a few hours or days is unlikely to be enough.
-
Do not depend on theory alone. You should read as much theory as possible but this is no substitute for hands-on time working with the product. If you want to learn how to customize a system view, understanding how this is done and any limitations is best done by creating some views!
My third nugget of “wisdom” is to keep returning to the skills measured statement. Your preparation needs to be very focused to ensure you don’t’ “waste” time researching subjects not covered. I often start my exam prep by printing off the skills measured and highlighting all of the topics I know I need to focus on. These might be new features I haven’t used or areas of the product I haven’t touched for a while.
So let’s begin by reviewing the skills measured, they’re split into four sections.

Thankyou sir. Approx what time is the best to give the exam? I have watched “81059AE-Customization in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Sales and Customer Service” and “81060AE-Configuration in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Sales and Customer Service”. What else do I need to revise ?

This is a very question to answer, as everyone is different. If you are experiences with Dynamics 365 and have cover the material you mention you are probably ready. But only you will really know if you at feeling confident enough! Good luck.

Thank you for these notes Neil. I’m currently preparing for my MB2-716 exam and I find your notes very helpful. I would like to ask you if there are practice tests available for this exam.
Thank you!

Sorry I am unaware of any practice tests as I don’t use them! I focus my own prep on using the product. I often avoid random practice questions as I have found they often have incorrect answers and cause me confusion.

Hi Neil, Thanks for sharing your knowledge, much appreciated. I’m studding for this exam too
I’m looking for advise please. My background is IT servers/client administration. I recently also started to work with Cisco and got CCNA. I participated in CRM migration project and gained good knowledge in Dynamics 365 so I’m also doing support/customization for Dynamics 365, no coding knowledge. I’m wondering if this can help starting career in Dynamics 365. I enjoy this area. What else I’m missing to improve my chances to specialize in this area? can I enter into this field without coding knowledge?
I’m torn between investing my time in Cisco or CRM learning. I enjoy both areas. Thanks

Hi
First of all let me say I have a coding background but I am not a developer and do pretty much no coding these days. So you can work in the Dynamics 365 field without being a coder. I have never been a CRM developer!
Now I am going to say that I love working with Dynamics and will recommend anyone to work with it. But only if you have a deep felt passion.
Only you can really know if your passion and drive is excited by Dynamics or Cisco. For me the decision is easy …. you need to decide which technology set excites you the most. Then focus on that.
Hope this helps, although not a direct answer to your question.
Neil.

Hello Neil,
Appreciate your efforts, Great piece of work !!
I’m working in CRM Dynamics for past 8 months, I plan to grow my knowledge in CRM Dynamics and get specialized in this area.As a starting point, I’m thinking of taking ‘MB2-716’ exam.
I started my preparation with your first post on Solutions, plan to read and implement each article a day.
Neil do you think I can pass this exam with 8 months of experience.
Also, i don’t have access to “81059AE-Customization in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Sales and Customer Service” and “81060AE-Configuration in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Sales and Customer Service” is there any alternative material/videos availalbe
Thanks

Thanks.
I do plan to eventually write about the other exams you mention. But I am sure you can imagine it is a long process and I only update my blog in my limited spare time!
8 months experience should be plenty. You’ll obviously need to ensure you study hard and get plenty of hands-on time. But that will be fun.
Good luck
Neil.

Hi
If I am right MB2-707 is the CRM 2013 customization exam.
In my opinion you’d be better taking a later exam. MB2-716 or maybe MB2-712. But I’d avoid any earlier ones.
This is just my opinion but I think potential employers would ideally like to see the new exams.
Neil.
